World Cup Commentating by Tommy Smyth

It was a painful defeat for Poland, but well worth watching for the insane commentary by Tommy Smyth. I thought I might be committing a "too soon," with my description of Poles streaming across the border to Germany in a reversal of 1939, but Tommy boy put me to shame with his strange transition from "Poland lost 6 million people during WWII..." to "...it's really amazing what they've done with this soccer team." Too bad Israel didn't make the cut this year. Israel v Germany would've been an interesting match, and I shudder to think what Smyth might have come up with.

Later in the game we were treated to this gem that Smyth's American companion didn't quite get:

-Did you know a Pole drilled the first oil well?
-Smyth: I thought it was a bit? (meaning drill-bit)
-No a POLISH PERSON...
-Smyth: Oh, I thought you meant a "pole."

On a high note, Michael Davies blog is awesome. It's got some great insider info and pics that allow you a bit of vicarious World Cup experience...unfortuanately it's BYOBB (Bavarian Beer).
